Preventing Dog Bites to Children (Part 2 of 12)

Preventing Dog Bites to Children (Part 2 of 12)

Every year, over 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs. Sadly, bites often happen to children.  While many dogs avoid aggressive behavior and pose low risks for biting, it is important to remember that any dog, regardless of age, breed or history, has the ability and the potential to bite.  Fortunately, dog bites can be both prevented and avoided.  Here are some tips to help your children stay safe around man’s best friend.

Is My Pet Overweight? (Part 13 of 13)

Round Hound?  Curvy Kitty?  Click here for tips on peeling off the pounds! (Continued)

Beware the New Normal

Because so many companion animals are overweight, pet parents have become desensitized to the sight of extra pounds.  Many of my clients are surprised to learn that their pet is overweight.  Similarly, owners of lean, perfectly conditioned pets will often ask me if their pet is too skinny.  The widespread nature of this problem is causing society’s paradigm to shift.  Overweight is the new normal, and healthy is the new anorexic. Please do not hesitate to bring in your pet to check her weight and body condition.  We would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Some pets have trouble maintaining a healthy weight due to underlying medical issues.  These include, but are not limited to diabetes, Cushing's disease and hypothyroidism.  It is important to have routine bloodwork done on your pet to check for signs of these and other ailments, especially as our pets get older.  Simple blood tests can help us to detect these problems while they are still easy and inexpensive to treat.  Of your pet has not had wellness bloodwork performed in the past 12 months, feel free to give us a call to make an appointment!
